How will we train younger generation of scientists with skils in understanding the glycans?

Recent results suggests that glycans play critical roles in human physiology and pathology. Understanding glycan protein interactions may lead to next generation of drugs. But limited research is being funded on understanding structure - function relationships on glycans. Likewise, we are training very few researchers in the glycosciences. Funding and review mechanisms are essential resources that can facilitate or hinder innovative research to meet the NHLBI goals. Moderating Positive Feedback between Research Funding and PhD/postdoc Numbers

A critical challenge will be to limit future destabilizing expansion of the number of PhD students and postdoc trainees. Would like to challenge definition of "Early Stage Investigator" for MD

Why is Early Stage Investigator defined as New Investigators who are within 10 years of completing their terminal research degree or within 10 years of completing their medical residency at the time they apply for R01 grants? This provides an unfair advantage to all PhD, general surgeons, internists, and pediatricians compared to subspecialists who complete clinical training 3-6 yrs after general training.
