RO1 funding rate

I would like to suggest the following changes in RO1 funding: (1) Reduce the amount but maintain the duration of each RO1 award to make academic research labs SMALLER but BETTER - This will force PIs pay closer attention to experimental design, to improve the efficiency and accuracy. It may entice more PIs to do more experiments themselves, the best way to reduce errors, maintain consistency and keep in touch with the ...more »

Establishment of an independent study section on Pulmonary Vascular Biology and Translational Research

The research on pulmonary vascular biology including smooth muscle cell biology and endothelial cell biology and related pulmonary vascular diseases such as pulmonary hypertension and related right heart failure, and endothelial dysfunction in lung vascular inflammation and acute lung injury, as well as pulmonary embolism and lung transplantation has been rapidly expanding. A fully qualiftied EHR (electronic health record) as defined in ACA/HITECH in the hands of patients reduces medical errors

No physician or hospital has an active data management system at point of care. coding is done by third parties and not the diagnosing physician. The Test with MED-O-CARD shows that an integrated Diagnostic/Medication Algorithm allows a patient and his physicians to run and view instant data analytic. This system can be expanded scientifically without pushing the patient again aside. Patient inclusion will increase quality ...more »

Credible Data and Analysis of the Biomedical Research Workforce

There is a need for sensible policies that require collection and scientific analysis of credible data relating to the biomedical workforce. The data currently available are weak – for example no one knows, to a factor of 2X, the actual number of postdocs in the United States. The absence of credible human resource and labor market data on the biomedical research workforce is very surprising. NIH could contribute greatly ...more »

Leveraging support from local institutions

Create a "Center of Excellence" designation in Cardiovascular Research akin to NCI's Comprehensive Cancer Center designation. Specific qualifications for such a designation will need to be defined. However this will encourage institutions to invest heavily in CV research to support such designation. In this way, local institutions will partner with NHLBI to support discovery in heart and vascular research.

scientific community in crisis- plans for stabilization

From my discussions with scientists at other universities and my own experience the scientific community is now in crisis akin to the recent crises in the housing and finance sectors. If not stabilized the damage is likely to be severe and long-lasting. The NIH/NHLBI as the vehicle for investment of the public's money in this enterprise has a responsibility to take IMMEDIATE action. My suggestions include 1) limit salary ...more »
