Goal 4: Develop Workforce and Resources

To support the future of investigator-initiated research by sustaining and developing a diverse biomedical workforce with the skills and research resources to pursue emerging opportunities in science.

How will we train younger generation of scientists with skils in understanding the glycans?

Recent results suggests that glycans play critical roles in human physiology and pathology. Understanding glycan protein interactions may lead to next generation of drugs. But limited research is being funded on understanding structure - function relationships on glycans. Likewise, we are training very few researchers in the glycosciences. More programs are needed to impart glycoscience knowledge at the undergraduate, ...more »

Modernizing Research Training

As the current chair of the Research and Training Division, I would like to convey that the AAAAI membership would like the NHLBI to consider the following in the development of its strategic plan:

Since the focus of research has changed over the past decade, training programs need to be encouraged to use newer models of research in their training and mentoring of potential research faculty.

Goal 4: Develop Workforce and Resources

Leveraging support from local institutions

Create a "Center of Excellence" designation in Cardiovascular Research akin to NCI's Comprehensive Cancer Center designation. Specific qualifications for such a designation will need to be defined. However this will encourage institutions to invest heavily in CV research to support such designation. In this way, local institutions will partner with NHLBI to support discovery in heart and vascular research.

Goal 4: Develop Workforce and Resources

Preparing a Diverse Biomedical Technology Development Workforce

How do we best develop a scientific workforce that is fluent in product development and commercialization issues? How can NHLBI best expand the training opportunities for early career scientists to prepare them for entry into the dynamic biomedical workforce landscape? There is a need for scientifically-trained experts from diverse backgrounds who also understand business needs relevant to biomedical technology development, ...more »

Shall we increase the transparency of the grant review process to prevent potential biases?

Financial and intellectual conflict(s) of interest are common in academic medical sciences. Those conflicts could potentially bias decisions of study section members and change grant application outcomes. During the grant review process, financial and/or intellectual conflict(s) of interest disclosures of the study section members are not readily available to the grant applicants or the public. Should the NHBI increase ...more »

Goal 4: Develop Workforce and Resources

Creating research infrastructure through supporting the development of biorepositories and registries for rare lung diseases

Progress in rare lung diseases, such as interstitial lung diseases, has been hampered by a lack of patient-derived samples in large enough quantities or high-enough quality for systematic study. This is due to the inability of individual centers to recruit enough patients, and because of the varied samples each center obtains. Collecting, preparing, and storing such samples is not fundable by the NHLBI because it is not ...more »

Strategic Visioning Initiative is just a beginning: it needs a mechanism for implementation

NHLBI Strategic Visioning Initiative is a good idea. You have received a score of useful suggestions from Academia and business. But like and good idea, it needs someone to follow through. Otherwise your new beautiful plans for cardiovascular research may die without a significant impact.

Goal 4: Develop Workforce and Resources

Predictable and Steady Funding Growth

There is a need for a predictable, steady expansion of funding of NIH. The repetitive booms and busts in research funding are a primary source of the current instability of the biomedical research and training systems. Funding goals should not be simply “more”, or another “doubling”, but instead a trajectory of steady expansion of research funding that can be sustained over the medium-to-long term.
