Recent results suggests that glycans play critical roles in human physiology and pathology. Understanding glycan protein interactions may lead to next generation of drugs. Increased methods training for investigators

It is clear that there are concerns about reproducibility and quality control in science in general and in obesity-related research in particular. Increased opportunities for training in rigorous scientific practices for obesity researchers and biomedical and behavioral researchers in general may be helpful to increase rigor and reproducibility.

Basic and Clinical Multi-disciplinary Partnerships to Understand Lung Disease

Basic scientists and clinicians have different training and bring different perspectives to lung disease research. Additionally, mechanisms that facilitate interactions of scientists from different fields may improve communication and facilitate novel ideas for lung disease research. RO1 funding rate

I would like to suggest the following changes in RO1 funding: (1) Reduce the amount but maintain the duration of each RO1 award to make academic research labs SMALLER but BETTER - This will force PIs pay closer attention to experimental design, to improve the efficiency and accuracy. Credible Data and Analysis of the Biomedical Research Workforce

There is a need for sensible policies that require collection and scientific analysis of credible data relating to the biomedical workforce. The data currently available are weak – for example no one knows, to a factor of 2X, the actual number of postdocs in the United States.
