Predictable and Steady Funding Growth

There is a need for a predictable, steady expansion of funding of NIH. The repetitive booms and busts in research funding are a primary source of the current instability of the biomedical research and training systems. Funding goals should not be simply “more”, or another “doubling”, but instead a trajectory of steady expansion of research funding that can be sustained over the medium-to-long term.

scientific community in crisis- plans for stabilization

From my discussions with scientists at other universities and my own experience the scientific community is now in crisis akin to the recent crises in the housing and finance sectors. If not stabilized the damage is likely to be severe and long-lasting. The NIH/NHLBI as the vehicle for investment of the public's money in this enterprise has a responsibility to take IMMEDIATE action. My suggestions include 1) limit salary ...more »

Early Career Physician Scientists are heading toward extinction

As seen by ~ 40% steady decline in number of K-08 grant applicants over 2005-2014 period, early career physician scientists who can do both basic-translation research and take care of patients are dwindling. Lack of institutional support, lack of ACGME support, increasing demands of clinical training, increasing compliance requirement, and disadvantaged position (i.e., significantly less preparation time and continued ...more »

More Salary for Postdocs

Postdocs, the major workforce of modern research, make less than the janitors, work harder and have way more stress in the work and personal life. We deserve a decent salary. We need to double the NIH salary standard for postdocs.

Making R01 funding work for the Medical Sciences

We need to spread R01 funding around more to ensure that the best science has funding adequate to move forward. To do this I believe changing how we think about R01 funding and expenditures can be used to put the NIH funds to better use. Too often successful researchers have the majority of their salaries on R01s and the institutions have little skin in the game. PI salaries can be a large part of the escalating budget ...more »

Strategic Visioning Initiative is just a beginning: it needs a mechanism for implementation

NHLBI Strategic Visioning Initiative is a good idea. You have received a score of useful suggestions from Academia and business. But like and good idea, it needs someone to follow through. Otherwise your new beautiful plans for cardiovascular research may die without a significant impact.

Enhance funding for population and public health research

Many challenges posted here focus on increasing translation and development of interdisciplinary teams. Diverse backgrounds and epidemiological training makes population and public health scientists ideal candidates to connect teams in different areas of research around translation to human health. While funding exists specifically for career development of physician and pre-clinical scientists, none exists for epidemiologists. ...more »
