Goal 1: Promote Human Health

To expand knowledge of the molecular and physiological mechanisms governing the normal function of heart, lung, blood, and sleep systems as essential elements for sustaining human health.

Goal 1: Promote Human Health

Interaction of blood cells with their environment

It is beginning to be known that malignant cells interact with neighboring cells and the course of their malignancy is directed by those cells. It is also known that transplanted stem cells interact with nearby cells and acquire direction of maturation and cell type from those cells. In my experience in unpublished work, the nature of the materials that leukocytes and monocytes have encountered during their apheresis ...more »

Goal 1: Promote Human Health

Individually-Tailored Approaches to Manage Perinatal Weight Gain to Improve Maternal and Infant Health

Managing perinatal weight gain is a major challenge in research and practice. More women enter pregnancy already overweight or obese which increases the risks for morbidity and mortality for both mother and baby. Novel strategies are needed to effectively manage weight gain in this population. This may include infusing engineering principles and dynamical modeling to better understand the complex interactions of biological ...more »

Lung Repair and Regeneration

What characteristics define progenitor lung cell niches? What controls proliferation and differentiation of lung progenitor cells in normal repair? Can endogenous repair mechanisms and alterations of progenitor cell cycle be harnessed to promote regeneration?

Missing upper teeth & sleep apnea treatment: Problems?

I am a 73 year old female with Hypersensitivity Pneumonitis, Complex Sleep Neap, using oxygen @ 4-5 L/min 24/7 who just had my upper teeth extracted. I notice this has a negative effect, or appears to, on the effectiveness of apnea treatment. I wake several times during the night with lips flapping! This did not happen before the extraction. Because there are still some lower teeth, I am unable to close my mouth ...more »

Goal 1: Promote Human Health

DESIGN AND EVALUATE INTERVENTION STRATEGIES TO IMPROVE SLEEP HEALTH AND CIRCADIAN DISRUPTION

Data indicate the association between short sleep and circadian disruption on a number of adverse outcomes such as cardiovascular disease, metabolic disorders, hypertension, etc. There is a need to move beyond association to interventions that can be shown to improve sleep duration and circadian disruption.

Goal 1: Promote Human Health

Combinatorial intervention of immune dynamics to combat cariovascular disease

Human health and disease are modulated by complex and inter-connected dynamic processes. With particular significance, a well-balanced immune environment may play a key role in maintaining health and preventing the pathogenesis of cardiovascular disease. Defining the dynamic programming and balance of immune environment will be the key for combinatorial therapies to reset homeostasis.

Goal 1: Promote Human Health

smoking cessation in rural and special populations

We are concerned about access to smoking cessation programs in populations that are hard to reach (rural) and who have other challenges (underserved/marginalized populations including people with serious mental illness). What kind of computer-based or mobile health technologies can assist these groups?

Goal 1: Promote Human Health

Global cohorts to fill gaps in knowledge

Given the global burden of disease, what does NHLBI plan to do to establish a diverse global cohort to connect basic sciences to population health, in a way that differences in phenotypes around the world can be studied rapidly? For example, why not start by supporting a coalition of cohorts originally funded by the Global Heart Initiative?

Goal 1: Promote Human Health

Reporting disaggregated data by sex

There is a need to better understand the biological basis for sex differences, particularly for identifying important basic factors that influence normal cardiovascular function and cardiovascular disease in males or females and explain differences in the overall prevalence, progression, and mechanism of cardiovascular disease.
