Goal 2: Reduce Human Disease

Role of extracellular RNAs in cardiac biology and disease

Extracellular RNAs including miRNAs, piRNAs, tRNA fragments and long non-coding RNA fragments have been found in plasma and correlated with disease. For microRNAs, there is emerging evidence of a functional role for these extracellular RNAs in cardiovascular diseases. However, there needs to be a concerted effort to: 1) develop new models and tools to study the role of these entities; 2) validate findings from different cohorts and groups in a coordinated manner; 3) develop bioinformatics tools for annotation of non-coding RNAs other than miRNAs found in biofluids; and 4) investigate the role of these other non-coding RNAs and their fragments in health and disease.
